"The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is"
- Jim Carrey, at his 2014 MIU commencement speech.
While I love how true Jim Carrey's words are to me on a meta-level, the nature of this chapter is a bit more of a practical one: it is about (financial) freedom.
To me, there are 3 practical currencies, Money (or other materialistic valuables like gold) is only one of them. There's the currency of time (we trade it for money). And then there's the currency of flexibility - the more options, the better. The latter is a diffcult topic, as I had a LOT of flexibility in my life between 2019-2023 and am currently embracing less instead of more.
I see how the three currencies are interconnected. Money can help us "buy" time and flexibility. Time can help us earn money and gain flexibility. And flexibility can help us use our money and time more effectively.
There are Three Universal Currencies.
Wether you pay with cash, time or flexibility - be aware of the trade off.
I am rewarded, when I bring good.
Those who create value usually receive money in return. If the process of value creation is happening intrinsically, it will result in time felt well spent. That is already close to the definition of blissful self-actualization. And it feels like playing.
Focus on Creating Value to Others.
If others value what you offer, they will pay you for it.
Finances "ON FIRE".
This is how I'd suggest handling money that's incoming: 30% Objective (housing,...), 30% Needs (food, drink, health,...). 10% "F*ck you" - Money, 10% Invest, 10% Retirement, 10% Education (travel, gadgets, art...).
Treat it with Respect - ON FIRE.
Follow a system that helps you multiply and sustainably work with your money, like "ON FIRE".
Time well spent.
Timeless truth: You're poor when your sole care is for money. When asked on their deathbed, the #1 advice people gave was to take the time to be oneself.
Consider Flexibility.
More to come here, soon.
